Foster Care
The Washington Humane Society (WHS) asks DC area residents to help alleviate overcrowding in our adoption centers by fostering pets. WHS is calling on individuals, families and businesses to volunteer as temporary foster care parents for homeless dogs and cats.
A short time in your home, a lifetime in your heart! Foster
volunteers fulfill a critical
component of our life-saving work. Any individual, family, or business with the
compassion and willingness to help needy animals can apply to serve as a foster
volunteer. Foster terms can range from a few days or weeks to a month or more
depending on the preferences of the volunteer and the needs of the animal.
We hope we can count on our generous community to join our
team, so that all of
our dogs and cats receive the best housing and care possible as they wait their forever homes.
Are you able to open your heart and home to an animal
in need but are not ready to adopt for one reason or another? Now could
be the perfect time to become a foster volunteer. WHS takes in an average of 30 animals per day. The team works around
the clock to provide for all of the animals in our care, but our space and
resources are limited. Each time an animal is taken out of our adoption
centers and placed into a home to be fostered, it provides us more
opportunities to help other animals who need our special care and
attention.

How do I become a foster parent?
If you are interested in becoming a foster for WHS, please complete the Foster Application.
After filling out the application, you will be contacted by the
Foster Care Coordinator, and if approved you’ll attend one of our foster
trainings. We want to make sure you have all of your questions answered
before you get started. After the training, you will be ready to start
fostering!
